Question on "Can We Withdraw from the 'Withdrawn?'"
In reference to the article, "Can We
Withdraw from the Withdrawn," what is the best way to deal with a close
family member who needs assistance during an illness? This person had left
the church many years ago.
Thanks,

Tolline,
I want to thank you
for your very relevant question concerning the limitations placed upon a
Christian in their relationships with another Christian who has been
“delivered to Satan” in the assembly of a local church (1 Cor 5:4-5). The Christian is commanded in this verse to withdraw his social company
from the man so marked. “But now I have written to you not to keep company
with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an
idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat
with such a person” (1 Cor 5:11).
The
reason why I would say “social company” is that other verses define the kind
of relationships we can have with such a one. “And if anyone does not
obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with
him, that he may be ashamed. 15Yet do not count him as an
enemy, but admonish him as a brother” (2 Thess
3:14-15).
This verse tells me the kind of
association that is allowed, namely one of teaching and exhortation.
What I cannot do, however, is to have normal, everyday social relationships
with this one, as if nothing is wrong.
There are
relationships that would not be forbidden by these verses. If one needed
medical care or some other physical need, the Christian should be able and
willing to help. Even in that setting I would try to teach. There could be
other scenarios involving a job, basic family needs and other things that
are not “social” but everyday issues of living.
The
foundational rule that would be in my mind as I make these decisions is:
“Does this one think that my actions imply that everything is OK?” and “I am
taking every opportunity to urge this one repentance and return to the
Lord.”
I hope
this has been helpful. Please let me know if you have any additional
questions.

Christian Love,
